Finding Online Balance with Squarespace
After spending what amounted to weeks of time and thousands of dollars for a semi-custom WordPress site, I couldn't be happier with what I get with Squarespace. Here's why today I'm launching a large upgrade to GiuioSciorio.com and CreatorsPath.org.
I'll admit that at first, not having help with a website was an uncomfortable place for me. I used to have a semi-custom WordPress site that was functional, but expensive, costing thousands of dollars a year. Making this year's theme 'back to basics' for me, I found that putting my photography first in my business had ripple effects including the necessity to simplify my website. I'm a huge proponent that Your Website is Your Social Network, so having a website that put my photography first while being easy to work with was paramount to this year's goals. The semi-custom WordPress site had to go and I replaced it with Squarespace.
The Big Picture
The main reason for my previous site being semi-custom was that when I was running Small Camera Big Picture, I had considered adding a forum to the site. After many friends convinced me that running a forum is a full-time job, I pulled out of the project, but still had a complex process to run my site that really didn’t fit my true needs.
To get things going quickly, I had chosen a template that worked ok, but it was more of a blogging template rather than one that showed off artwork. This template allowed me to put focus on Creator's Path Podcast until I was able to slow down my travels enough to reorganize my photography in a way that made sense and was marketable.
The site I'm launching today via Squarespace immediately shows viewers what I do best - make beautiful portraits, while allowing me to feature my cinemagraph, motion work and Creator's Path Podcast. In addition, I'll be able to add a store when I'm ready to sell something.
Here’s the best part: after only what amounted to a full day’s work, I'm damned stoked to have this new site launched and I’m loving the looks, features and ease of use I now have. The features, price and customer service are high end yet the price is something anyone can afford.
