My Dream Camera Bag

My dream camera bag to my knowledge doesn’t exist. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Think Tank Retrospective 5 and use it every day and have no complaints but it’s not the right bag for every occasion. It’s not a great bag for hiking/taking long walks for example. I’m looking for a backpack or sling bag that my micro four thirds lenses won’t swim in and I have yet to find one.  The mirrorless systems have grown rapidly in popularity and it’s time camera bag manufacturers start tailoring to the smaller camera systems.

I will say I really like the little Olympus Mini backpack that I got with my E-PM1 for the Pen Ready project. It is WAY smaller than a regular camera bag. I can guarantee no DSLR would fit in that bag.  It was made specifically for micro four thirds and we need more bags like that.  The OMD just barely fits in it with the grip on but the battery part of the grip would need to be kept somewhere else in the bag.  In addition to the body it holds 2-4 lenses. The two Lumix zooms will fit but you won’t be able to fit a 3rd lens with those hogging up all the room.  I have taken it on hikes and used it as a lens bag while I carried my camera.  I was able to fit up to 5 lenses in it that way.

Olympus OMD + 75-300mm, 60mm macro, 45mm and Lumix 20mm

Ideally I’d like a bag that has the following features:

  • will hold the OMD, the two Lumix zooms, and 3-4 additional lenses
  • the compartments would need to be 3-3.5″ deep and not much more than that
  • small pockets on the sides to hold batteries, memory cards, business cards etc.
  • a pocket on the back for slightly larger items like a cell phone, flash,
  • a pocket or two inside the bag for stuff like a color checker, gray card and/or small light diffuser/reflector

I’ve asked for recommendations in a few forums and I’ve gotten some feedback but nothing that really met what I was looking for. Several people said they had resorted to using a regular backpack and converting it into a camera backpack and that may be the way to go, at least for now.

I received word of a new Olympus backpack coming out that might be just what I’m looking for. It’s currently available from Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-CBG-6-PEN-Backpack/dp/B004IK9P22

I have a large single strap (so it can easily be rotated around front) backpack from Lowepro and I also have a nice Pinestone Retrospective 5 which carries my E-M5 and/or E-PL5 and a surprising number of lenses around with me everwhere I go. I call it my “man bag”, lol.

But what I did because I got tired of packing and repacking when I did urbex runs or other big event, was to take out a bunch of the partitions in the Lowepro and make a “hollow” for the Retrospective 5 to nestle into! I fold the top back and down and I then have a “bag within a bag” and don’t need to repack each time. The big bag has room for less frequently used specialty lenses, strobes, and so forth. It has straps for a tripod to strap on the side as well.

Maybe I’m just lazy — but I love not having to unpack/repack as I transition between bags.

Yeah the Retrospective 5 is my everyday bag, it’s basically my purse. It’s great for carrying the OMD and one or two lenses along with all my other junk (checkbook, keys, phones, etc. :)

I found the Lowepro Flipside to be a pretty good backpack for my micro 4/3 system. It’s not too deep, which as you mentioned prevents small lenses from getting lost.

I tried a Lowepro “Nova 160 AW”. It’s light, small, has a nice strap and nice handle, and has a rain-coat system that is pretty clever. It looks like a camera bag, which isn’t ideal, but I couldn’t find ideal either. I’m not sure it’s QUITE big enough for what you ask, but it’s only like $55 at my local shop, and I’ve put the following in without any trouble:

    OMD-E5, spare battery, flash
lenses: Pana 45-200, 14, 20, 25 and Oly45. Can swap out one for a small Oly kit zoom.

other stuff: small bendy-style tripod, camera strap and hand strap, biz cards, white/grey/black card set, card-reader, lens-cloth

It has little pouches on the side which don’t seal up, so I haven’t found much use for them, but I could imagine some things going in there. My kindle also fits nicely in the back/flat slot.

Things are a little cramped with all of that, but I don’t really usually need all of that. I’m not a “pro” so I don’t “go on shoots” so I can usually just pick a lens or three and it’s enough. If I upgrade the Pana 14 to the Oly12, I’ll probably have a little less space ;-)

Sorry about the crappy phone-cam pics.

What about the Think Tank Street Walker G used for his In the Bag segment?

      Hi Dave,

my Streetwalker is a great bag. I use it for all my commissions since its comfortable and carries a lot of gear in a small size. It does not have a space for a tablet but I have put my iPad in it with a padded cover. The cover got a bit dented because of the pressure but it did work.

Most of the time now I just wifi the pick from the shoot to my Galaxy S3 and email it from there to my client.

That’s looking like a good choice for me. If I have to, I can carry the pack in a shopping bag with sleeve for my netbook when I travel. I have been shooting things over to my iPhone using the Eye-Fi card

The Street Walker looks a little big to me but I may need to try it out. What I should do is sell my old DSLR backpacks that I don’t use anymore so I can buy a new one. I had a huge Lowepro bag that I used more for camera gear storage than anything. The Streetwalker might be a good replacement for that. I could probably fit all my lenses in it.

I’m thinking the same thing too, with my Airport Acceleration bag.
