Is Google Drive for you?

So the other day I saw a post “do you use Google drive to back up your photos”? And I was thinking, what is Google drive? No really…. What is Google drive? I’ve heard of Google Docs, but I have never heard of Google drive. So, I looked it up.

Is Google Drive for you?

Now being in technology, I should know when new things happen, apparently I totally missed this one. So I decided to sign up and tried it out. I was impressed on how fast I was able to start uploading files. I was already a Google + user so literally, three clicks later (about sixty seconds) I was uploading a half gigabyte file to their server.

This is a very quick and fast way to transfer files to friends and customers. Google drive gives you 5 GB of cloud storage. You can buy additional storage, which is shared between Picasa and Google Drive. You can buy 25 GB up to 16 TB through a paid monthly subscription, starting at $2.49 per month for 25 GB.

It can be used anywhere you go, at the office, in your home, or on the web. It can also be used with your phones, android or iPhone and mobile devices like an iPad. Of course because it’s also an online storage, if something goes wrong with your computer, phone or iPad your files are safely storied.

Now your files can go anywhere you go

You can change a file on the web, on your computer, phone or on other mobile devices and it will automatically upload, download, and sync them across multiple devices on every device that you’ve installed Google Drive. You can also share, collaborate or work by yourself: it’s up to you.

Now, I know there a lot of other online services out there. What makes Google drive different from the rest of them (like Dropbox & I-cloud)? Well Google drive also gives you instant access to Google Docs it’s an editing suite tool that allows you to work on documents even when you’re away from your computer. Google Docs (is now part of Google Drive) is a free, Web-based office program offered with Google drive. It allows you to create and edit your documents online while collaborating in real-time with friends, family or customers.

Did I mention how easy it is to post things to Social media networks like Google +, Facebook and photo’s to Picasa. It’s also really fast at sending files, music tracks, documents, or photos, from an Android device to the online drive.

Speaking of Social media, I posted a few questions over the last week about Google Drive. Come to fine out I have 6 friend that have been using it for some time and even more friends that have been using Google Docs for years! Almost all of the feedback has been really good (except from that one paranoid friend, of course).

So give it a try, if you’re looking for some free storage. If your already using Google Chrome, Google + or Picasa this might be the perfect fit for you!

do you like it better than the equivalent free Microsoft Live storage and office apps?

Hi Tim, I haven’t used Microsoft Live in a few years. So I really can’t comment on which one is better. But Google drive is free, so try it out!
