Instagram announced today, with the release of version 4.0, the ability for photographers to use video clips in addition to still photographs. This is a huge announcement and great news for lovers of hybrid photography. The fact that the largest photo sharing social network made the move to hybrid has me excited to the MAX and heres why -
Hybrid Instagram is a great way to pomo for hybrid photographers
I have a place to share my stills + motion and sound hybrid eproducts such as this one
My Hybrid Instagrams will feed my Facebook timeline, Twitter Feed and Tumblr giving me even more traction to my promos. Plus I can email direct from Instagram to anyone in my address book. This alone has been a great help for one to manage content to their social media and now I can drip Hybrid Motion Portraits to my social feeds! So in a nutshell Hybrid Instagram is potentially a killer marketing platform for hybrid photographers but there are some things missing.
What missing in this update
Hybrid Instagrams won’t auto play in Facebook Timeline
Right now anyone that wants to see the Hybrid Instagram move needs to click on the post which will take them to the Instagram page and then they’ll have to click on the play button. One click is one too many in my opinion. The presentation of Hybrid Motion Portraits needs to be seamless and smooth. This is also an issue with every other social network you might post your Hybrid Instagrams too.
I can understand why a Hybrid Instagram won’t play though; no one wants to hear an annoying sounds over and over and over…that said there still needs to be a fix for those that want their Instagrams to play.
Can’t load motion files from the camera roll
This is the biggest challenge for those that want to post content captured with their hybrid camera such as the Lumix GH3. For the example above I had to set up my iPhone on a tripod and capture the hybrid motion portrait from my Cinema Display. The ability to load content from the camera roll is a feature that Cinemagram has had for a while. Problem is that its a much smaller network.
Hybrid IS the future of photography
Instagram is taking the world of social media to the next level. Yes you can argue that Vine was there before Instagram and that Cinemagram and Echograph were the first but it is Instagram that sets the standard. The fact that the big IG made the move to Hybrid is yet more validation to the hybrid photography movement.
I’m an artist and I happen to use a camera to create. The ability to share my still photography is nice but the ability to share it moving and with sound is next level stuff.
How are you using hybrid photography with your promotions and social media? Let me know in the comments.
