5 alternatives to Photoshop for enthusiasts

Although I’ve been using Photoshop since 1993 and consider myself an expert, I’m always finding new tricks and techniques to learn. Photoshop is a beast of a program and one that takes time, effort and dedication to master if mastery is even a possibility.  ;-)

Then there’s the cost. Priced around $600 Photoshop is not cheap even for the Creative Cloud it ends up over $200 a year. As such Photoshop is really best suited for professionals or enthusiasts that are committed to heavy post in their workflow.

So what about everyone else? No worries, I dug around the web and found five alternatives to Photoshop worth checking out.

Let me know in the comments if you are using any of these programs or if you have found additional alternatives.

Pixelmator

Photoshop Elements

Take a Look at Photoline (http://pl32.com). Very powerful, for Win and Mac, and of course a 64Bit App. — Hannes

Aperture or Lightroom, especially with a few selected plug-ins (Nik and onOne), can do 99% of what Photoshop does for most users. Plus, Aperture or Lightroom manage the images superbly which is what they were originally designed to do. I add Pixelmator–a real bargain–to the mix for rare tasks but stay in Aperture most of the time. Haven’t used Photoshop in years.

Great idea about the plugins! I didn’t even think of that.
